The film lost Best Picture to Silence of the Lambs, but Howard Ashman and Alen Menken took home Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Beauty and the Beast”). Both “Be Our Guest” and “Belle” were also nominated for Best Original Song.

At the Oscars, announced by fellow cast member Angela Lansbury, Paige O’Hara, Richard White, and Jerry Orbach performed “Belle” and “Be Our Guest” on stage.
